The myth of the Spanish Civil war of 1936-39 was challenged by George Orwell in his biographical account of his time there -
Homage To Catalonia - and more recently in Paul Johnson's book
MODERN TIMES: The World From The Twenties To The Eighties (updated in 1991 and its title changed accordingly). Also worth reading
is this account of William Herrick, who served as a US volunteer against Francisco Franco's uprising and who broke with the laughably misnamed Abraham Lincoln Brigade because of the fact it was a Soviet tool.
