Why Must "Society" Be Blamed For Individual Criminals?

It has become among the most bitter stories of the spring as indictment has come down to nine teenagers accused of harassing and bullying Phoebe Prince, a student at South Hadley HS in Massachusetts, to the point that she killed herself. Local media coverage has been universally condemnatory toward not just the students but the school, local parents - indeed, blame has been assigned to virtually everyone except the nine students indicted.

The mother of one of the accused has come out in defense of her daughter by asserting that Prince was no innocent victim but had engaged in harsh exchanges with others. It is a rare story that hasn't toed the line that the school, the parents, basically everyone except the nine teens indicted is as guilty of killing Phoebe Prince as though they'd pulled the trigger themselves.

The tragedy has also led to a lot of commentary about anti-bullying laws, but in basically advocating such laws the media, prosecutors, et al have refused to consider a pertinent question - just what business is it of government, state or local, to police individual relationships between high school students?

It's worth asking because the premise here is fundamentally wrong - what is being done is the penumbra of guilt has been spread across what amounts to entire groups. Phoebe Princed killed herself - why is this an indictment of a group of others instead of the individuals involved in this specific incident? Why is this something that prosecutors have to meddle in instead of letting the school itself handle it - or better yet, the individual students themselves?

When government meddles in something best left to individuals, nothing good ever comes of it. A great many of us have been bullied in high school in our youth, and it is a safe bet no one benefitted from anything beyond handling it ourselves and ultimately outgrowing it.

Making what amounts to a state crime of this can't possibly benefit anyone, because government is meddling where it has no business - in the individual relationships of individual persons.

Obama's Empty Victory

Astonishingly, Obamacare passed - by seven votes. It took a massive surge of pork-addition to the bill and patented Obama dishonesty in pushing the program's costs to get it done, yet there was The Man On The Way Up signing a bill that by any objective measure cannot work - as started to become obvious as two key promises in Obamacare - that parents could keep kids on their insurance programs until age 26, and denial of the claim that small businesses would be forced to stop or scale back hiring - exposed themselves as phony.

And the fight will only get worse, with state lawsuits against the policy among other acts of resistance to Obama's nationalization of health care, to go with the striking level of weakness Obama displayed in this fight - he lobbied for the ball in the name of his presidency, and the list of broken promises by Obama can only come back to haunt him.

Repeal Obamacare.

What the summit showed most glaringly was how illiterate The Man On The Way Up is on how the health care system actually works, and how this illiteracy helps drive his absurd proposals.

Representative Paul Ryan went after The Man On The Way Up. It was the equivalent of a one-punch knockout by Ryan.

Drinking To Ecomomic Illiteracy

The Man On The Way Up has been trying to ignite a war against private insurance companies over "excessive" profits. The Rome Sentinal of New York notes that comparing the profit margins of private insurance companies to those of beer brewers shows brewers make far more of a profit than private insurance companies, yet the Obamaniacs aren't going after Big Beer. The Permanent Campaign Smears Ryan

There's a new target for the Left to attack - Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan. The assault stems from a plan he's leading to deal with the economy, and it's gotten positive feedback from the Congressional Budget Office.

As the link notes, the attack on the plan is irresponsible (and typical of Democrats) because no credible alternative is offered and the Democrats pretend the problems the plan addresses don't exist. Rep. Ryan's plan is worth more than what it's getting.

UPDATE: - The assault is continuing with the usual talking points about "cuts" in Medicare. It is typical of the Democrats, a party lacking any credible policy of their own - and explains the assault, for as the link's author puts it, the Democrats' focus on the plan is bait-and-switch.
