Media Hopes It Has New Pentagon Papers

First we need to repost this July 26 piece:

WikiLeaks is a sign that publishes purloined documents, and it has found some 77,000 pages of documents on the Afghanistan war, with another 15,000 on the way. WikiLeaks released the documents to three media outlets who want to press a case for US withdrawal, even though the documents themselves don't make that case; instead they illustrate what the US is actually doing, and what the enemy is doing.

The piece cited above notes that the release is a Rorschach test, and WikiLeaks leaked them to media outlets they felt would use them to press the case for withdrawal. The problem is the documents don't make that case.

Of course it's been done before - in 1971 the Institute for Policy Studies obtained "the Pentagon Papers," a voluminous cache of documents on US planning and debate before and during the Vietnam War. The New York Times printed excerpts of the papers to make the case for US withdrawal - except it had to all but falsify what the papers actually said to make that case.

It caused a firestorm at the time and was a turning point in the dishonesty of the Mainstream Media. The MSM may hope it achieves success here, but with the way the media landscape has changed there is more reason to hope rationality wins out.


UPDATE: Julian Assage, the creep in charge of WikiLeaks, defended himself on the Today show, this after he leaked the infamous Apache gunship footage trying to prove nonexistent "collateral murder." But as shown here he's guilty of what he slandered the Army for, and as a Wired link in the story shows, some of what Assange leaked isn't true.

Why Must "Society" Be Blamed For Individual Criminals?

It has become among the most bitter stories of the spring as indictment has come down to nine teenagers accused of harassing and bullying Phoebe Prince, a student at South Hadley HS in Massachusetts, to the point that she killed herself. Local media coverage has been universally condemnatory toward not just the students but the school, local parents - indeed, blame has been assigned to virtually everyone except the nine students indicted.

The mother of one of the accused has come out in defense of her daughter by asserting that Prince was no innocent victim but had engaged in harsh exchanges with others. It is a rare story that hasn't toed the line that the school, the parents, basically everyone except the nine teens indicted is as guilty of killing Phoebe Prince as though they'd pulled the trigger themselves.

The tragedy has also led to a lot of commentary about anti-bullying laws, but in basically advocating such laws the media, prosecutors, et al have refused to consider a pertinent question - just what business is it of government, state or local, to police individual relationships between high school students?

It's worth asking because the premise here is fundamentally wrong - what is being done is the penumbra of guilt has been spread across what amounts to entire groups. Phoebe Princed killed herself - why is this an indictment of a group of others instead of the individuals involved in this specific incident? Why is this something that prosecutors have to meddle in instead of letting the school itself handle it - or better yet, the individual students themselves?

When government meddles in something best left to individuals, nothing good ever comes of it. A great many of us have been bullied in high school in our youth, and it is a safe bet no one benefitted from anything beyond handling it ourselves and ultimately outgrowing it.

Making what amounts to a state crime of this can't possibly benefit anyone, because government is meddling where it has no business - in the individual relationships of individual persons.

Obama's Empty Victory

Astonishingly, Obamacare passed - by seven votes. It took a massive surge of pork-addition to the bill and patented Obama dishonesty in pushing the program's costs to get it done, yet there was The Man On The Way Up signing a bill that by any objective measure cannot work - as started to become obvious as two key promises in Obamacare - that parents could keep kids on their insurance programs until age 26, and denial of the claim that small businesses would be forced to stop or scale back hiring - exposed themselves as phony.

And the fight will only get worse, with state lawsuits against the policy among other acts of resistance to Obama's nationalization of health care, to go with the striking level of weakness Obama displayed in this fight - he lobbied for the ball in the name of his presidency, and the list of broken promises by Obama can only come back to haunt him.

Repeal Obamacare.
