Israel Took Out Syrian Nuclear Base Circa 2007

Believe It or Not, Syria Could Be In Even Worse Shape

Syria is a bloody mess. Its cities lie in ruins. Its antiquities have been destroyed. And the Syrian leader continues to kill his own people. The death toll may be as high as a half million people. Some 10 million Syrians have been displaced. Reporters working there have described it as hell on earth and the images they've provided support their portrayal.

It's hard to imagine how things could be ghastlier. And yet, if not for a stealth nighttime attack a decade ago, the situation today would almost certainly have been worse. Syria might well have been a young nuclear power.

On Sept. 6, 2007, Israeli fighter jets screamed through the skies of western Syria to drop their payloads on the al-Kibar nuclear facility and end, at least temporarily, the secret nuclear program of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. The buildings that housed Syria's budding nuclear efforts, unknown to the world, had been the focus of a mad, behind-the-scenes diplomatic scramble for several months, as the Israelis tried to enlist U.S. support for the pre-emptive strike.

The Myth of Rafsanjani

Former Iranian president Ali Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani, a so-called Iranian moderate and pragmatist, died Sunday at 82.

"For a picture of the cleric, who served as president of Iran from 1989 to 1997, read these excerpts from pieces over the years by WEEKLY STANDARD contributing editor Reuel Marc Gerecht.

Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, … is in the West probably the most misunderstood cleric in the Islamic Republic. For the Europeans, and some in the Bush administration, Rafsanjani was the white-turbaned hope, the realpolitician-pragmatist who would save the West from a showdown over Iran's nuclear-weapons program. In reality, he is the true father of Iran's nuclear-bomb program, an overlord for the Iranian terrorism that struck Europe in the 1980s and '90s, and quite possibly one of the dark princes behind the domestic assassination campaign of Iranian liberals that began in the late 1990s. Concerning Israel, Rafsanjani has never given any indication that he differs with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a group Rafsanjani has always supported: Israelis are best when dead."

Obama Administration Loosens Nuclear Deal After Iran Violates It

The Iranians have openly cheated the nuclear deal, so the Obama administration will not penalize them.

"The International Atomic Energy Agency said in a recent report that Iran violated the nuclear deal by exceeding its limit for heavy water, a material used in the production of weapons-grade plutonium. The State Department would not call the incident a formal violation Wednesday, and told reporters Thursday that it did not see the 130-metric-ton threshold laid out in the nuclear deal as a hard, certain figure.
"If you look at the wording within the [nuclear deal], it actually says that Iran's needs, consistent with the parameters … are estimated to be 130 metric tons. State Department spokesman Mark Toner told reporters. That's not a hard certain figure............
"After Iran exceeded the heavy water threshold in February, the Obama Administration bought thirty-two tons of Iranian heavy water for roughly $8.6 billion. The purchase ensured that the country remained in compliance with the nuclear deal."

So the Obama adminstration is openly covering for Iranian cheating on nuclear weapons.
